- **The week:** Pluto turns direct on Thu 15 Oct, the week's main event, after the Libra New Moon on Sat 10 Oct.
- **For you:** Pluto turns direct in your own sign, so one habit in how you present yourself can change.
- **Do this:** On Fri 16 Oct, wear the one thing you have been saving.
- **Dates:** Sat 10 Oct and Thu 15 Oct.

Your birth chart is a castle: twelve rooms for twelve areas of life. Each week the planets open different doors, and this paper tells you which rooms are worth entering.

New to the rooms? They are explained on the [castle page](https://the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io/castle/).

## Album of the week

**The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds**, Mort Garson (with Jacques Wilson and Cyrus Faryar), 1967\. About 40 minutes. [Source for the story](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The%5FZodiac:%5FCosmic%5FSounds?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds came out on Elektra Records on 20 May 1967, a concept album with one piece for each sign.

## The Star Chart: your sky this week

You are the Astronomer: this week Pluto turns direct in your own sign, and the Libra New Moon falls in your 9th house, the Observatory tower.

What could you change about how you present yourself, now that Pluto turns direct in your sign?

### Pluto stops rewinding in your own sign · Thu 15 Oct, 10:40 pm ET

**THE DRESSING ROOM** · 1st house · how you present yourself and start things

Pluto turns direct in Aquarius, your rising sign, so this one is personal. How you present yourself, which you have reviewed since May, can start to change.

**Try this**
- Fri 16 Oct: Wear the one thing you have been saving.

♇︎ Pluto stations direct in Aquarius, Thu 15 Oct, 10:40 pm ET (Fri 16 Oct, 02:40 UTC), your 1st house

### A dark moon in the Observatory tower · Sat 10 Oct, 11:50 am ET

**THE OBSERVATORY TOWER** · 9th house · travel, study, beliefs and big questions

A new moon falls in your house of study, belief and long journeys, so these can start fresh. Think about a belief you repeat, and what would change your mind.

New Moon in Libra, Sat 10 Oct, 11:50 am ET (15:50 UTC), your 9th house

### The Sun and Jupiter link the tower and the Hall · Thu 15 Oct, 4:22 am ET

**THE OBSERVATORY TOWER** · 9th house

**THE GREAT HALL** · 7th house · partners and close one to one relationships

The Sun sextiles Jupiter, linking your 9th and 7th houses: beliefs and big questions meet partners and close one-to-one talk. Ask for an objection before you ask for agreement.

**Try this**
- Wed 14 Oct: Ask the person whose views differ most from yours for a coffee or a call.

☉︎ Sun sextile ♃︎ Jupiter, Thu 15 Oct, 4:22 am ET (08:22 UTC): ☉︎ Sun in Libra in your 9th house, ♃︎ Jupiter in Leo in your 7th house

Pluto turns direct in Aquarius, your rising sign, so this one is personal.

## Tarot

1\. What the New Moon in your Observatory asks you to observe

Queen of Wands, reversed

**Look.** A queen in a yellow gown holds a sunflower and a tall wand; a black cat sits nearby.

**Ask yourself.** She keeps her warmth turned inward; what are you watching before you speak?

Show the reading

**Then read.** Queen of Wands, reversed, turns warmth inward. That suits the New Moon in your Observatory tower, where the job is to watch quietly before performing.

2\. What the Sun's sextile to Jupiter asks you to test

Knight of Swords, upright

**Look.** A knight in armour and a red plume gallops on a white horse, sword raised, past wind-bent trees.

**Ask yourself.** The knight charges into the wind; which idea are you impatient to test?

Show the reading

**Then read.** Knight of Swords, upright, is the idea that cannot wait to be tried. Thursday's Sun and Jupiter sextile offers him a way into the Great Hall, your 7th house.

3\. What Pluto, turning direct in your own sign, asks you to adjust

Ten of Cups, upright

**Look.** A couple with arms raised and two dancing children face a house, under an arc of ten cups.

**Ask yourself.** The family welcomes an arc of cups; what reward are you working toward?

Show the reading

**Then read.** Ten of Cups, upright, is a household in the open, the reward before the work. It argues with Pluto's reputation for stripping things bare: read it as a direction.

**The thread.** Watch before you speak. Test your idea on someone. Treat the reward as a direction.

Cards: Pamela Colman Smith, Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, 1909\. Drawn at random from one shuffle.

## Planet of the week

**In your chart.** Pluto is in your 1st house, the Dressing Room, the room for how you present yourself and start things; it is in your own sign.

**This week.** Pluto stations direct in Aquarius on Thursday 15 October at 10:40 pm ET (02:40 UTC Friday), ending a backward drift that began on 6 May. It has been in Aquarius since 19 November 2024 and stays until 8 March 2043; in Western astrology it is the slow planet of deep change, buried things, power and endings.

**Egyptian.** Osiris was the Egyptian god of the dead and of returning crops. His court weighed each dead person's heart against the feather of Maat, the goddess of truth.

**Mesopotamian.** In the Descent of Inanna, an old Mesopotamian story, the goddess Inanna goes down into the underworld. She passes seven gates and gives up a piece of clothing at each.

**Hindu.** The boy Nachiketa, in the old Hindu text called the Katha Upanishad, goes to the house of Yama, who rules death. He turns down wealth and asks what happens after death.

Chalcedony scaraboid in silver ring, mid-5th century BCE, Greek, Chalcedony, silver, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/243611?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). A tiny Greek gem, about 1.5 cm wide, carved in chalcedony and set in a silver ring; the Met tags it with Persephone and Hades.

Osiris, ca. 1080–664 BCE, Egypt, Copper alloy, stone, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/546112?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). A bronze statuette about 33 cm tall; its green is the metal's corrosion, not paint.

### Correspondences

Colour: black and dark red

Modern sources give black for Pluto, and dark red or maroon belongs to Scorpio, its co-ruled sign; these are modern attributions, not ancient ones.

Metal: plutonium

The metal was named after the planet when it was identified in 1940 and 1941, so the link runs from the planet to the element and not the other way.

Gems: obsidian, black tourmaline, red spinel, dark garnet

These come from a gem retailer's modern list, with no documented classical use.

Plant: the pomegranate

Pomegranate seeds, given to Persephone by Hades in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, are why she must go below for part of each year; later writers name the fruit his sacred plant.

Foods: onions, leeks and mushrooms

Modern astrology sites file these under Scorpio, Pluto's co-ruled sign, which makes them folklore of recent date.

Part of the body: reproductive organs and elimination

Modern books give them to Scorpio first and then, by extension, to Pluto.

Altar suggestions

Ideas, not rules:

- A shard of obsidian
- A pomegranate
- A small dark lamp or torch
- A dish of black sesame seeds
- Vetiver oil
- A blue-black cloth
In Vedic astrology

There is no Pluto in the classical Jyotish system, which counts nine grahas: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

## The Strange Instrument Case: the museum object

Bonsai Plum, Compass, and Pocket Sundial with Design of Calendar, from Spring Rain Surimono Album (Harusame surimono-jō, vol. 3), 1806, Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, Japan, Privately published woodblock prints (surimono) mounted in an album; ink and color on paper, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/54068?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

**Look first.** A small plum tree with red blossoms grows in a blue pot with white dots, standing on a red lacquer tray. Beside it lie a round compass, a white round object and a folded calendar with yellow tabs, with lines of poetry at the left.

**Context.** A woodblock print of 1806 by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, one sheet in the Spring Rain surimono album. Surimono were luxury prints privately commissioned and paid for by their patrons rather than sold in shops.

**Notice.** Look at the small round instruments set beside the blue-dotted pot, and at the lines of poetry on the left.

## The deep dive

Pluto's label changed twice, and its name never did.

Clyde Tombaugh found Pluto on plates exposed at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff in January 1930\. On 18 February he saw it move with a blink comparator, a device that flips between two photographs. The discovery was announced on 13 March 1930.

Venetia Burney, an eleven-year-old in Oxford, suggested Pluto after her grandfather Falconer Madan, a former Bodleian librarian, read the story at breakfast. He passed the idea to the astronomer Herbert Hall Turner, who cabled Lowell, and the name was adopted on 1 May 1930.

Greek Plouton means 'the rich one', and Plato says in the Cratylus that people preferred it to Hades because Hades inspires fear. The Roman Dis Pater, 'Rich Father', is perhaps a direct translation.

In 1978 James Christy found Pluto's largest moon Charon. On 24 August 2006 the International Astronomical Union defined a planet as a body that orbits the Sun, is round and has cleared its orbit, and Pluto became a dwarf planet.

New Horizons flew past on 14 July 2015, carrying a dust counter named for Venetia that students alone designed, built and operated.

Astrologers had no Pluto before 1930, and its meanings stayed inconsistent until the mid-1970s.

**To think about:** Which label of yours could change while your name stays?

## Movement

Walk in loops and keep your ankles loose; astrology traditionally gives your sign the ankles and calves.

**Look up.** Saturn stands in the east after sunset and is up until sunrise, Jupiter rises before dawn in the east in Leo, and Mars passes in front of the Beehive Cluster in the early hours of 11 October, which is good in binoculars. Venus is too low to see.
