- **The week:** A New Moon on Sat 10 Oct gathers the week, the Sun meets Jupiter on Thu 15 Oct, and Pluto turns direct soon after.
- **For you:** Your 11th house, the Courtyard, opens the week. Look at the friends and groups already around you.
- **Do this:** On Sat 10 Oct, write down three people you would happily share a long journey with.
- **Dates:** Sat 10 Oct and Thu 15 Oct.

Your birth chart is a castle: twelve rooms for twelve areas of life. Each week the planets open different doors, and this paper tells you which rooms are worth entering.

New to the rooms? They are explained on the [castle page](https://the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io/castle/).

Ali Farka Touré, the Malian guitarist, and Ry Cooder, the Californian slide player, first met in London in 1992 and recorded this album in Los Angeles in about three days.

## The Road Atlas: your sky this week

You are the Adventurer: this week the Libra New Moon opens your 11th house, the Courtyard, and Pluto turns direct in your 3rd house.

Which plan with friends is worth starting, and who will join you?

### A New Moon gathers your friends · Sat 10 Oct, 11:50 am ET

**THE COURTYARD** · 11th house · friends, groups and shared hopes

A new moon is a small start, and this one falls in your house of friends and groups. You don't need to look for new people this week; the ones you need are already around you.

**Try this**
- Sat 10 Oct: Write down three people you would happily share a long journey with.

☉︎ Sun and ☽︎ Moon conjunct in Libra, your 11th house

### The Sun and Jupiter start talking · Thu 15 Oct, 4:22 am ET

**THE COURTYARD** · 11th house

**THE OBSERVATORY TOWER** · 9th house · travel, study, beliefs and big questions

The Sun sextiles Jupiter, linking your 11th and 9th houses: friends, groups and shared hopes meet study, travel and bigger questions. One friend may enjoy talking about a place, a belief or a plan.

**Try this**
- Thu 15 Oct: Tell one friend something you believe, and ask what they think.

☉︎ Sun sextile ♃︎ Jupiter, in Libra and Leo, your 11th and 9th houses

### Pluto turns direct in the Library · Thu 15 Oct, 10:40 pm ET

**THE LIBRARY** · 3rd house · how you think, talk and learn, and the people close by

After months of going backward, Pluto moves forward in the house of words and short trips. Something you have been reconsidering about what you read, say or learn can start moving again.

**Try this**
- Thu 15 Oct: Finish or drop one book or message thread you keep going back to.

♇︎ Pluto stations direct in Aquarius, your 3rd house

Something you have been reconsidering about what you read, say or learn can start moving again.

## Tarot

1\. What the New Moon in your Courtyard asks you to set out for

The Chariot, upright

**Look.** An armoured driver stands in a chariot beneath a starry canopy, with two sphinxes, one black, one white.

**Ask yourself.** The driver steers two sphinxes without reins; what is pulling you forward right now?

Show the reading

**Then read.** The Chariot, upright, is a start driven by will. Like the New Moon in your Courtyard, it asks you to set out with friends pulling the same way.

2\. What the Sun's sextile to Jupiter asks you to carry

Four of Swords, reversed

**Look.** A knight lies on a slab, with one sword above, three swords below and stained glass beside.

**Ask yourself.** The knight lies still but restless; what would real rest look like for you?

Show the reading

**Then read.** Four of Swords, reversed, is blocked rest and a mind that will not switch off. Beside the Sun's friendly angle to Jupiter, it says rest before carrying an idea on.

3\. Where Pluto, turning direct in your Library, lets you arrive

The Moon, reversed

**Look.** A moon with a face drops flecks past two towers, a dog, a wolf and a crayfish.

**Ask yourself.** The dog and the wolf call toward the moon; which of your fears is fading?

Show the reading

**Then read.** The Moon, reversed, is fog thinning slowly: fears fade, though not all at once. With Pluto turning direct in your Library, clear thinking about what you say comes in stages.

**The thread.** Start with company. Rest before you push. Let the unclear parts clear.

Cards: Pamela Colman Smith, Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, 1909\. Drawn at random from one shuffle.

## Planet of the week

**In your chart.** Pluto is in your 3rd house, the Library, the room for how you think, talk and learn, and for the people close by.

**This week.** Pluto stations direct in Aquarius on Thursday 15 October at 10:40 pm ET (02:40 UTC Friday), after turning retrograde on 6 May. Western astrology associates Pluto with deep change, endings, buried things and power. Its name comes from the Roman god of the underworld.

**Egyptian.** Osiris was the Egyptian god of the dead. Before him, each dead person's heart was weighed against the feather of Maat, the goddess of truth.

**Hindu.** The Katha Upanishad, an ancient Hindu text, tells how a boy named Nachiketa walks into the house of Yama, god of death. Offered wealth and long life, he turns them down and asks what happens after death.

**Mesopotamian.** In an old Mesopotamian story, the goddess Inanna goes down into the underworld through seven gates, giving up a piece of her clothing or her power at each.

Yamantaka, Destroyer of the God of Death, early 18th century, Tibet, Distemper on cloth, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/37807?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). In Tibetan Buddhist tradition this blue figure in a ring of orange flames overcomes Yama, the god of death.

Statuette of Osiris, 664–525 BCE, Egypt, Late period (715–332 BCE), Dynasty 26 or later, bronze, hollow cast, The Cleveland Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://clevelandart.org/art/1940.670?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). A small bronze from the Late Period: the mummy-shaped body, tall atef crown and crossed arms identify him.

### Correspondences

Colour: black, and dark red

Modern sources give these colours for Pluto, with maroon for Scorpio; they are modern assignments, not ancient.

Metal: plutonium

The element was named after the planet after its 1940 to 1941 discovery, so the link is a later tradition, not a Hermetic one.

Gems: red spinel, dark garnet, obsidian, black tourmaline

Modern sellers of stones, not classical writers, assigned Pluto its gems; nothing documents an ancient use.

Plants: the pomegranate

Hades gives Persephone pomegranate seeds in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, and she must return below for part of every year. The source is myth, not astrology.

Foods: onions, leeks and mushrooms

Modern astrology books give these to Scorpio, Pluto's modern co-ruled sign, as strong, earthy foods.

Part of the body: the elimination and reproductive organs

These are given to Scorpio and so, by extension, to its modern co-ruler. The link is symbolic only, not medical.

Altar suggestions

Ideas, not rules:

- A pomegranate
- A garnet
- A coin from another country
- A black cloth and a small map
- A sprig of cypress
- A glass lantern and a tea light
Vedic note: no Pluto

Classical Jyotish has nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

## The Trunk of Curiosities: the museum object

Luster Bowl with Four Camels, 10th century, Iraq, Earthenware; luster-painted on opaque white glaze, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/451768?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). The record gives no maker; the title calls the four animals camels.

**Look first.** A shallow white bowl painted in gold-brown metallic lustre. Four animals, each in its own round frame, circle a central flower, with dotted patterns filling the gaps between them. Each has a ring-shaped eye, and all four are seen in profile.

**Context.** The Met gives it to Iraq, 10th century: earthenware painted with luster on an opaque white glaze, a luxury ceramic of Abbasid Iraq. It is 9 inches (23 cm) across, and no maker is recorded.

**Notice.** Look at how the four animals are turned around the central flower, so the bowl seems to spin like a compass.

## The deep dive

Pluto's name was suggested in March 1930 by an eleven-year-old in Oxford.

Clyde Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, photographed the same patch of sky on 23 and 29 January 1930\. On 18 February he saw one dot move between the plates in a blink comparator. The discovery was announced on 13 March.

Venetia Burney's grandfather Falconer Madan, a former Bodleian librarian, read the news in The Times and mentioned it to her; accounts differ by a day or two on when. Her suggestion was Pluto, the Roman god of the underworld. Madan passed it to Herbert Hall Turner, the Oxford astronomer, who cabled Lowell, and the director, Vesto Slipher, announced the name on 1 May 1930.

Greek Plouton means the rich one, a polite title for Hades, whom people feared to name; Plato says so in the Cratylus.

On 24 August 2006 the International Astronomical Union ruled Pluto a dwarf planet, and the name stayed. New Horizons passed Pluto on 14 July 2015 carrying the Venetia Burney Student Dust Counter, built and run by students.

Book 3, Fable 12: Pluto and Proserpina, from "Fables Nouvelles", 1719, Nicolas Henry Tardieu, Etching and engraving, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/820037?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). A winged messenger bends toward the seated king of the dead while a woman stands before him; a bident lies on the step.

**To think about:** What would you want a name you gave to carry?

## Movement

Take a long, easy walk this week, with a friend or with a podcast about somewhere you have never been.

**Look up.** Saturn is in the eastern sky from sunset until sunrise, and before dawn Mars sits in front of the Beehive Cluster in the constellation Cancer on Sunday 11 October, best seen with binoculars; Jupiter rises in Leo before dawn. Venus is too low in the twilight to see this week.

## This week's calendar

- **Sat 10 Oct:** **Hindu:** Mahalaya Amavasya, the last day of the ancestors' fortnight.
- **Sun 11 Oct:** **Hindu:** Navratri begins (Ghatasthapana).
- **Sun 11 Oct:** **Jewish:** Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, the new month (day one of two).
- **Mon 12 Oct:** **Canadian:** Thanksgiving in Canada.
- **Wed 14 Oct:** **Eastern Christian:** Pokrova, the feast of Mary's protecting veil.

The Goddess Durga Killing the Buffalo Demon, Mahisha (Mahishasura Mardini), ca. 1760, India (Rajasthan, Mewar), Ink, transparent and opaque watercolor on paper, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/74653?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). Durga rides a lion over the buffalo demon Mahisha while two attendants on birds let garlands fall. Look at the green waves and red stains around the buffalo's head.

Hindu dates vary by region and by panchang; Bengali Durga Puja counting can differ from other Navratri lists by a day.
