- **For you:** Your 11th house, the Courtyard, where Venus, the Sun and Mercury all gather: count what each shared plan costs.
- **Do this:** Mon 19 Oct: Write down what one group or shared plan costs you each month, in money and in hours.

## Album of the week

**Tabula Rasa**, Arvo Pärt, 1984\. About 55 minutes. [Wikipedia: Tabula Rasa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabula%5FRasa%5F%28P%C3%A4rt%29?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

ECM Records released it in 1984, under the direction of Manfred Eicher, the first recording of Pärt's music in a long collaboration with the label. The title piece features violinists Gidon Kremer and Tatjana Grindenko, Alfred Schnittke on prepared piano, and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Saulius Sondeckis.

## The Survey: your sky this week

You are the Architect: this week a bill for a shared plan arrives first, and by Saturday the Sun, Venus and Mercury all stand in your Courtyard.

Which friendship or group is built to carry weight through winter, and which only looks sturdy from the road?

### Venus squares Pluto · Tue 20 Oct, 2:56 am ET (06:56 UTC)

**THE COURTYARD** · 11th house · friends, groups and shared hopes

**THE TREASURY AND PANTRY** · 2nd house · money, food, what you value

Venus, retrograde in Scorpio, squares Pluto in Aquarius, so your 11th house of friends, groups and shared hopes meets your 2nd house of money, food and what you value. A friendship, a group or a shared plan meets a question about cost: who pays, what it is worth, and what it takes from your own resources.

**Try this**
- Mon 19 Oct: Write down what one group or shared plan costs you each month, in money and in hours, and settle on one number you would defend aloud.

♀︎ Venus in Scorpio, retrograde, 11th house · square ♇︎ Pluto in Aquarius, 2nd house · Tue 20 Oct, 2:56 am ET (06:56 UTC)

### The Sun enters Scorpio · Fri 23 Oct, 5:38 am ET (09:38 UTC)

**THE COURTYARD** · 11th house

The Sun leaves Libra, where it lit your 10th house of work and reputation, and enters Scorpio and your 11th house. The spotlight moves from what you are known for to who you do it with: colleagues become allies, or turn out to be strangers. Your week turns toward company.

**Try this**
- Fri 23 Oct: Walk over to one person from a group you belong to and ask what they are building that could use another pair of hands.

☉︎ Sun enters Scorpio, 11th house · Fri 23 Oct, 5:38 am ET (09:38 UTC)

### Venus lines up with the Sun · Fri 23 Oct, 11:44 pm ET (Sat 24 Oct, 03:44 UTC)

**THE COURTYARD** · 11th house

Venus, retrograde in Scorpio, lines up with the Sun in your 11th house. Venus covers what you value and who you like, and the Sun makes it plain. Friendships and group loyalties show their real weight: which ones you would stand behind, and which have only been habit.

**Try this**
- Fri 23 Oct: Make a short list of the groups you belong to and mark each one keep, mend or let go, so the list is ready for the weekend.

♀︎ Venus in Scorpio, retrograde, 11th house · conjunct ☉︎ Sun in Scorpio · Fri 23 Oct, 11:44 pm ET (Sat 24 Oct, 03:44 UTC)

A friendship, a group or a shared plan meets a question about cost: who pays, what it is worth, and what it takes from your own resources.

## Tarot

1\. What to lay down when Venus squares Pluto

Four of Cups, upright

**Look.** A young man sits under a tree, arms folded, three cups before him and a fourth offered from a cloud.

**Ask yourself.** Which cup is he looking at, and which is he ignoring?

Show the reading

**Then read.** Four of Cups, upright. A figure under a tree ignores the cup being offered. Venus squares Pluto over shared costs on Tuesday, so one obligation can be set down. Your 11th house is about groups, so keep the time alone short.

2\. What to bear as the Sun enters Scorpio

The World, upright

**Look.** A dancer in a purple cloth holds two wands inside a green wreath, four creatures in the corners.

**Ask yourself.** What do the four creatures in the corners seem to be watching?

Show the reading

**Then read.** The World, upright. Something long is finished. The Sun enters your 11th house on Friday, so friends and groups get to see the work you carried.

3\. What to complete as Venus meets the Sun

Ace of Pentacles, upright

**Look.** A hand from a cloud holds a gold coin with a star, above a garden path and a flowered arch.

**Ask yourself.** Where does the garden path lead once you step through the arch?

Show the reading

**Then read.** Ace of Pentacles, upright. A solid first offer. Venus lines up with the Sun in your 11th house late Friday, which gives a shared plan something to stand on. Finish the heavy plan first.

Cards: Pamela Colman Smith, Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, 1909.

## Planet of the week

**In your chart.** Mercury is in your 11th house, the Courtyard. In ordinary life that means messages with friends, groups and shared projects: group chats, mailing lists, who is told what and when.

**This week.** Mercury turns retrograde in Scorpio on Sat 24 Oct, 3:12 am ET (07:12 UTC), and stays retrograde for the rest of this edition. Until then it moves forward.

**Hindu.** In Hindu tradition the planet Mercury is Budha, child of the Moon god Soma and of Tara, who was married to Brihaspati, teacher of the gods. Soma abducted Tara and a war followed until Brahma stepped in; Tara named Soma as the father and the boy was called Budha, "the wise" ([Tara](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tara%5F%28Hindu%5Fgoddess%29?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io)) and [Budha](https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/budha?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io)).

**Norse.** The English Wednesday is Woden's day, a translation of the Latin dies Mercurii, because Roman writers matched Mercury with Odin. In Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda, Odin wins the mead of poetry from the giant Suttungr and carries it back to the gods as an eagle ([Skaldskaparmal](https://www.wikipedia.com/wiki/Skaldskaparmal?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io) and [Wednesday](https://www.wiktionary.com/wiki/Wednesday?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io)).

**Chinese.** Mercury is Chenxing, the planet of Water, which belongs to the north and to the Black Tortoise, a tortoise wound with a snake that guards the northern sky ([name](https://chinesenotes.com/words/68796.html?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io) and [five planets](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese%5Fconstellations?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io)).

Nine Celestial Bodies (Navagraha), 700s, Central India, Sandstone, The Cleveland Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://clevelandart.org/art/1971.61?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). Nine carved figures stand in a row: the nine celestial bodies of Indian astrology, among them Budha, the planet Mercury.

## The Instrument Case: the museum object

Portable diptych sundial, ca. 1598, Ivory, brass, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/188849?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

**Look first.** An ivory case opens like a small book. Red-brown hour lines fan out across the lid around a sun face, a round compass sits in the base, and a white string runs between them. Zodiac signs run along the edges of the lid.

**Context.** Hans Tröschel the Elder made it in Nuremberg around 1598 and signed the lid. A pocket sundial like this told the time by sunlight, and the compass lined it up with north.

**Notice.** Notice the string. Pulled tight, its shadow falls across the hour lines, and the dial reads correctly only when the lid stands at the right angle.

## The deep dive

This is how a scholar, with no instrument but a close knowledge of Greek, moved a famous set of books forward by well over a thousand years.

Florence, around 1460: a Greek manuscript with part of the Corpus Hermeticum arrives, and Cosimo de' Medici sets Marsilio Ficino to Latin work on it before any Plato. The version is dated 1463\. Ficino read its author, Hermes Trismegistus, "Hermes the Thrice-Greatest", as a wise Egyptian priest older than Plato and a source for him. The name itself pointed that way: Hermes Trismegistus is the Greek god Hermes merged with the Egyptian Thoth, god of writing.

In 1614 Isaac Casaubon, a Swiss-born philologist, set the books against the evidence carried by their own Greek. The wording and ideas were too recent, he argued, to be ancient Egyptian; they belonged to the first centuries CE. The range scholars now work with runs from about 100 to 300 CE.

That is dating as measurement: no date was written on the books, only a known scale of how Greek was used in each period, and a text placed against it. The date range is the established part. The reach of it is interpretation: Frances Yates called it a blow to Hermetic natural theology, while Jan Assmann and others note that belief in an older origin continued.

Statue of a scribe with a baboon, ca. 1300–1080 BCE, Egypt, Granodiorite, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/544748?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). A scribe of New Kingdom Egypt sits with a baboon, an animal linked to Thoth, the god of writing who was later merged with Hermes.

**To think about:** What evidence would you trust to date an undated book?
