## The Muster Roll: your sky this week

You are the Knight, and the week begins with Venus backing into your 7th house to reopen an old agreement.

Venus, retrograde, backs out of Scorpio and into Libra on Sunday at 5:09 am ET, entering your 7th house of partners and close one-to-one relationships, and it ends the week in Libra. On Monday at 8:11 am ET the Sun, in Scorpio, in your 8th house of shared money and debts, squares Pluto in Aquarius, in your 11th house of friends and groups. A joint obligation collides with what a group expects of you. Mercury, retrograde in Scorpio in that same 8th house, squares Mars in Leo, in your 5th house of creative work and play on Friday at 1:20 pm ET. That sets an argument about who pays for what beside a project you started for pleasure. Saturn and Neptune stay retrograde in your 1st house all week.

Which agreement are you still honouring that you would write differently now?

Sun 25 Oct

### Venus, retrograde, re-enters Libra · Sun 25 Oct, 5:09 am ET (09:09 UTC)

**THE GREAT HALL** · 7th house · partners, close one-to-one relationships

Venus, retrograde, backs from Scorpio into Libra, your 7th house of partners and close one-to-one relationships. It then moves backward through the sign over the rest of the week.

In the Great Hall, a former partner, client or rival you had filed as finished may send a message or turn up, and the terms you agreed back then could be what you end up arguing about.

♀︎ Venus (retrograde) in Libra, your 7th house

Mon 26 Oct

### The Sun squares Pluto · Mon 26 Oct, 8:11 am ET (12:11 UTC)

**THE VAULT** · 8th house · shared resources, debts, endings and what is hidden

**THE COURTYARD** · 11th house · friends, groups and shared hopes

The Sun in Scorpio, in your 8th house of shared money, debts and endings, squares Pluto in Aquarius, in your 11th house of friends, groups and shared hopes. Those two houses push against each other.

In the Vault, a joint account, loan or inheritance runs into the Courtyard, where a team, club or group chat expects you to chip in or go along. Dues, a split bill or a shared fund could be where it shows.

☉︎ Sun in Scorpio, your 8th house, square ♇︎ Pluto in Aquarius, your 11th house

Fri 30 Oct

### Mercury squares Mars · Fri 30 Oct, 1:20 pm ET (17:20 UTC)

**THE VAULT** · 8th house

**THE GARDEN AND BALLROOM** · 5th house · play, romance, creativity and pleasure

Mercury, retrograde in Scorpio, in your 8th house of shared money and debts, squares Mars in Leo, in your 5th house of creativity, play and romance. Retrograde Mercury rechecks old terms and Mars wants to proceed.

In the Vault, a figure or a clause from an old agreement gets reread. In the Garden and Ballroom, you want the project, the date or the party to go ahead. The two meet over a bill or a promised share.

☿︎ Mercury (retrograde) in Scorpio, your 8th house, square ♂︎ Mars in Leo, your 5th house

Dues, a split bill or a shared fund could be where it shows.

## Tarot

What are you ready to charge at?

Seven of Swords, upright

**Strategy, stealth, going it alone.** The Seven of Swords is the card of the plan carried out alone and quietly: strategy, a little stealth, getting something done without announcing it. It can also mean avoiding the direct route. With Venus back in Libra on Sunday, the thing you charge at is one you have already worked out in private.

Where do you hold the line?

Six of Cups, upright

**Nostalgia, memories, kindness.** The Six of Cups is the card of memory and old kindnesses: the past offered back as a gift, loyalty to what was good once. Upright, it is warm but can bind. When the Sun squares Pluto on Monday, the line to hold is around an old arrangement you keep honouring out of habit.

What is worth yielding on?

Page of Swords, upright

**Curiosity, sharp questions, vigilance.** The Page of Swords is quick, curious and alert, the one who asks sharp questions and wants to win the exchange. Upright, that energy is useful when pointed at learning and risky when pointed at a point of pride. With Mercury squaring Mars on Friday, yielding on a small point costs little.

Cards: Pamela Colman Smith, Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, 1909.

## Planet of the week

Venus is retrograde and crosses back into Libra on Sunday.

Freyja is the Norse goddess of love and desire, and modern writers often set her beside Venus. In the Poetic Edda poem Grímnismál, Odin lists the halls of the gods and says Freyja decides the seating in the field Fólkvangr, where she chooses half of those who fall in battle each day, while Odin takes the other half. The Prose Edda's Gylfaginning gives her hall there the name Sessrúmnir. She is the goddess of love who also keeps a place for the war dead. Both texts were written down in Iceland, in the 13th century, long after the stories began. See [Fólkvangr on Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%B3lkvangr?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

English Friday comes from Old English Frige-dæg, a translation of the Latin dies Veneris, Venus's day. The Frige in it is usually taken to be Frigg, Odin's wife, whom some writers have blurred with Freyja.

Terminal for an Open Ring Brooch, ca. 950, Viking, Silver, gold, and niello, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/472550?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). Viking-age silver and gold from the same Scandinavian world; the record does not connect it to Freyja.

## Museum object

Helmet (Khula Khud), first half 19th century, Iranian, Steel, iron, copper alloy, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/25031?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

This steel helmet has a rounded bowl topped with a tall spike, two curved horns rising from its sides and a curtain of mail hanging far below it, cut into points along the lower edge. The bowl and horns carry engraved roundels, and a band of inscription runs around the base.

The Met's record calls it a khula khud, made in Iran, in the first half of the 19th century from steel, iron and copper alloy. It came to the museum in 1896 as a gift from the family of the collector John Stoneacre Ellis.

The record gives its height three ways: 68.6 cm with the mail, 30.5 cm with the nasal bar, and 25.4 cm for the steel bowl alone. The whole helmet weighs 2,120.5 grams, a little over 4 lb 10 oz.

## The long read

In 1507, under Motecuhzoma II, every fire in the Mexica capital went out. Hearths were put out, old pots and clothes thrown away, houses swept and statues washed, and people climbed onto their roofs to wait. Priests had gone to Huixachtlan, the hill now called Cerro de la Estrella in Mexico City, and nothing was relit until they gave the signal. The ceremony was the Toxiuhmolpilia, the Binding of the Years, and 1507 was the last one held. Known earlier dates are 1351, 1403 and 1455 ([World History Encyclopedia](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/866/the-aztec-new-fire-ceremony/?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io)).

The signal was the Pleiades, called Tianquiztli, usually glossed as 'marketplace'. The historian Miguel León-Portilla, citing Cecelia Klein, writes that the fire was drilled when the cluster crossed the meridian at midnight at the end of the 52-year cycle ([UNAM article](https://nahuatl.historicas.unam.mx/index.php/ecn/article/download/9222/8600?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io)). That much is well supported. The Pleiades are high at midnight in November, which fits the month given for the ceremony.

The number 52 comes from two calendars running together: a 260-day ritual count and a 365-day solar year. They return to the same starting pair after 18,980 days, which is 52 solar years or 73 ritual cycles. That is arithmetic. The fear attached to the moment comes from Sahagún's Florentine Codex, Book 7: that the sun would not rise and the Tzitzimime, star-demons, would come down and eat people. Sahagún wrote under Spanish rule, so how the Mexica themselves held that fear is interpretation.

Accounts say a fire was kindled on the chest of a sacrificed captive, then used to light a bonfire that could be seen across the basin. Runners carried pine torches to the Templo Mayor and from there to every hearth ([Mexico City museum page](https://mexicocity.cdmx.gob.mx/venues/museo-fuego-nuevo/?lang=en&ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io)).

Figure of a Warrior, after 1325 (thermoluminescence date of casting core, 1345–1575), Central Mexico, Tetzcoco?, Aztec, Post-Classic Period, gold-silver-copper alloy (cast), The Cleveland Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://clevelandart.org/art/1984.37?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). The Cleveland Museum of Art's record says military accomplishment was prized by the Aztecs and that the gold shows this warrior's elite status.
