## Album of the week

**Journey in Satchidananda**, Alice Coltrane, 1971\. 37 minutes. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey%5Fin%5FSatchidananda?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

Alice Coltrane made it after the death of her husband John Coltrane, and named it for Swami Satchidananda, to whom she had been introduced. She played harp and piano with Pharoah Sanders, Cecil McBee and Rashied Ali. Four tracks were recorded at her home studio in Dix Hills, New York; "Isis and Osiris" was recorded live at the Village Gate.

## The Tide Table: your sky this week

You are the Mystic, and on Sunday Venus turns back into your 8th house, where shared money and old debts get a second look.

Venus, retrograde, backs out of Scorpio and into Libra on Sunday at 5:09 am ET, leaving your 9th house for your 8th. Joint accounts, debts and insurance come up for a second look, and a balance that seemed settled may not match your records. The Full Moon follows in Taurus on Monday at 12:11 am ET in your 3rd house, opposite the Sun in Scorpio, in your 9th. Messages, siblings and short trips are at their fullest while the long plan, the faraway trip and the course stay unfinished. On Friday at 1:20 pm ET, Mercury, retrograde in Scorpio, in your 9th house, squares Mars in Leo, in your 6th. Revised plans collide with a daily routine that wants things done now, and with Mercury retrograde, redrafting is likelier than a clean launch.

Which bill or favour is still open, and who holds the other end of it?

### Venus (retrograde) backs into Libra · Sun 25 Oct, 5:09 am ET (09:09 UTC)

**THE VAULT** · 8th house · shared resources, debts, endings and what is hidden

Retrograde Venus moves back from Scorpio into Libra, the sign it keeps all week. For you it leaves the 9th house and enters the 8th, which covers shared money, debts, endings and what is kept out of view.

In the Vault, the old accounts open: a joint card, a loan from a relative, a deposit never returned, an insurance claim sitting in an inbox. Whoever holds the other copy of the paperwork may remember the figures differently.

### The Full Moon in Taurus lights your messages and plans · Mon 26 Oct, 12:11 am ET (04:11 UTC)

**THE LIBRARY** · 3rd house · learning, siblings, short trips and everyday messages

**THE OBSERVATORY TOWER** · 9th house · travel, beliefs, higher learning and the big picture

The Full Moon falls in Taurus, in your 3rd house, opposite the Sun in Scorpio, in your 9th. The 3rd covers learning, siblings, short trips and everyday messages; the 9th covers travel, beliefs and higher learning.

The Library sits opposite the Observatory tower. In the Library, replies are stacking up, a sibling's text is waiting and a day trip wants a date. In the Observatory, the course, the big trip and the long plan are still in outline.

**THE OBSERVATORY TOWER** · 9th house

**THE BATHHOUSE AND APOTHECARY** · 6th house · daily routines, health and small remedies

Mercury, retrograde in Scorpio, in your 9th house, squares Mars in Leo, in your 6th. The 9th covers travel, beliefs and higher learning; the 6th covers daily routines, health and small remedies.

In the Observatory tower a plan is being redrawn, and in the Bathhouse and Apothecary Mars wants the daily routine done now. The revised plan may clash with the schedule it has to fit, such as a course date against a work shift.

## Tarot

What is surfacing?

Eight of Swords, upright

**Feeling trapped, self-imposed limits, the blindfold.** The Eight of Swords is the card of feeling trapped by a limit that is mostly a belief. Upright, the restraint is looser than it feels and the way out is open. With Venus back in Libra on Sunday, what surfaces is how much you owe against how much you are owed.

What is dissolving?

Eight of Pentacles, upright

**Diligence, craft, mastery.** The Eight of Pentacles is the card of craft: skill built by repeating the work until it is second nature. Upright, it is slow, steady progress that only shows in hindsight. Under the Full Moon on Monday, the doubt about your own pace dissolves.

What is being carried?

Eight of Wands, reversed

**Delays, scattered energy, slowed messages.** The Eight of Wands is the card of swift movement: messages, travel, things arriving fast. Reversed, they slow, scatter or land late. With Mercury squaring Mars on Friday, what is carried is a message that arrives later than planned and gets better for the delay.

Cards: Pamela Colman Smith, Rider-Waite-Smith tarot, 1909.

## Planet of the week

Venus is retrograde all week and crosses back into Libra on Sunday.

In Book 2 of Ovid's Fasti, the Roman poet's verse calendar, the monster Typhon frightens the gods into flight. Venus takes her small son Cupid to the Euphrates, and when the monster's noise reaches them they jump into the river. Two fish bear them away. Ovid says the fish were placed among the stars as Pisces, and that this is why the Syrians think it wrong to eat fish. In Ovid's Metamorphoses Venus turns herself into a fish to hide from Typhon, and Pseudo-Hyginus, a later handbook of star stories, has both of them take fish shape. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/248710?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). ## Museum object

Shell engraved with winged female deity, sphinxes, and lotus plants, 700–600 BC, Levant, Shell (Tridacna squamosa), The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/327548?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io).

The Met titles this object "Shell engraved with winged female deity, sphinxes, and lotus plants". In the black and white photograph, her wings spread out from the middle of the shell and a long robe of small squares runs down the centre, with fine engraved lines covering the rest of the surface.

The Met's record dates it to 700 to 600 BC, places it in the Levant and gives the material as shell, Tridacna squamosa. It names no maker. A small hole pierces the shell at the centre of the figure, just where the wings meet; one way to read it is that the shell was meant to be hung or strung.

Tridacna squamosa is a giant clam of warm reef waters such as the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific, not of the Mediterranean coast, so the shell had come a long way before anyone engraved it.

## The long read

In 1507 the people of Tenochtitlan put out every fire in the city, climbed onto their roofs and waited. They were keeping the Toxiuhmolpilia, the "Binding of the Years", held once every 52 years. [The Mexico City government's museum page](https://mexicocity.cdmx.gob.mx/venues/museo-fuego-nuevo/?lang=en&ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io) gives the known ceremonies as 1351, 1403, 1455 and 1507, and the last was held under Motecuhzoma II.

The Mexica ran two calendars at once, a 260-day ritual count and a 365-day year. They start together again after 18,980 days, because 52 times 365 and 73 times 260 both come to that figure. That arithmetic is certain. Wikipedia's [New Fire ceremony](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New%5FFire%5Fceremony?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io) article says the rite was meant to secure another 18,980 days of sun.

According to [World History Encyclopedia](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/866/the-aztec-new-fire-ceremony/?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io), households discarded old hearthstones, utensils and clothes, swept the streets, washed the idols and tied bundles of 52 reeds, one reed for each year. The friar Bernardino de Sahagun recorded the fear behind it from Nahua informants: if the fire did not catch, the sun would not rise and star demons, the Tzitzimime, would come down and devour people. That is the Mexica's own account, written down after the conquest.

The signal came from the sky. Priests on Huixachtlan, the hill now called Cerro de la Estrella in Mexico City, watched for the Pleiades, which they called Tianquiztli, usually glossed as "marketplace", to cross the meridian at midnight. Sources differ on whether the cluster stood exactly overhead, so "high in the sky" is the safe wording. Accounts say a fire was then kindled on the chest of a sacrificed captive.

For a city built on islands in Lake Texcoco, the flame on that hill could be seen across the water. Runners carried pine torches to the Huitzilopochtli shrine on the Templo Mayor and from there to every hearth. The 1507 ceremony was the last, and Tenochtitlan fell before the next.

Chalchiuhtlicue, 1325–1521 CE, Mexica (Aztec), Basalt, pigment, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. [Museum page](https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/307651?ref=the-flow-state-herald.ghost.io). Chalchiuhtlicue, Mexica goddess of water, in basalt and pigment; the Met dates it to 1325 to 1521.
